Internet-of-Things (IoT) related business projects, the related data security and privacy risks they pose are evolving rapidly. An IDC survey commissioned by Spirent, found some IoT implementations to be surprisingly mature, with study participants indicating their Security implementations were between 5 and 10 years old.

Rapid Maturity: The Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly maturing with more than 40% of respondents to an IDC survey on IoT security and privacy risks indicating their organization manages six to 10 IoT implementations. The survey was commissioned by Spirent.
Rising Risks: IoT projects driven by business goals are prompting enterprise IT security teams to consider ways to address the new security and privacy dangers they pose. Web and application security vulnerabilities are the biggest concern followed by privacy and data exposure and lack of encryption.
Increasing Costs: Financial Services and Healthcare firms are using data loss prevention, security analytics, and other traditional IT security controls to mitigate IoT risks, but survey respondents from both industries expect to increase their IT security spending to adequately address security and privacy concerns.
Breach Assistance: The number of IoT security breaches and incidents indicated by respondents is high despite apparent adherence to security best practices. More than 90% of survey respondents indicated they sought outside, specialized assistance with their IoT security breach or incident.
